Hello!

Thanks for taking the time to check out my work. I'm Ash, an award-winning filmmaker and documentary wedding photographer based between New Zealand and London.

Every year I photograph my eight nieces and nephews for my mum's New Year calendar. It's my favourite shoot of the year - kids don't think about the camera or how they look, they're just present. When they're comfortable, their personalities shine through completely unfiltered.

That's what I've learned from years of shooting weddings too: the best photos are never the posed ones. It's the kids stealing cake, being feral in their formal wear, the unscripted chaos when everyone forgets the camera exists.

So before I head back to New Zealand for the summer wedding season, I'm offering a limited number of family sessions here in London. November and December only. No corporate business, no conveyor belt. Just me, your family, and 90 minutes of real life documented beautifully.

We asked Ash to photograph our three kids after seeing her work at a wedding we attended. We'd had family photos done before but they felt quite forced and awkward, so we thought we'd try a different approach. Ash was so easy-going, she chatted to the kids, asked them questions, getting to know them while they warmed up to her, and then just started playing with them, all while capturing these really natural, beautiful shots. She genuinely has a lovely way with children. Even our youngest, who's usually quite shy, took to her immediately and kept asking when she was coming back. We weren't sure about adding film to the package, but decided to go for it, and we're so glad we did - those shots have something really special about them. The photos are gorgeous, and Ash is just a lovely human. We ended up chatting over mulled wine after the shoot. If you're thinking about it, just book her!

How it works

-

How it works -

  • We'll have a relaxed chat about your family - who's shy, who's the clown, what makes everyone laugh. Whether you want to be in the photos or if it's more about the kids. We'll talk about whether you're drawn to the immediacy of digital or the soul of film, or a mix of both. I'll help you think about location (your home is always my favourite), but if the weather gods are shining on us, we can explore an outdoor shoot. And what to wear? Some families love to dress up a bit, others keep it relaxed and everyday. Both look beautiful. The only thing that matters is that you feel comfortable and like yourselves.

  • This isn't a photoshoot - it's just a couple of hours with someone documenting it beautifully. 90 unhurried minutes. I'll arrive with enough time beforehand to chat and settle in with you. Even though we're strangers, it quickly won't feel like it. We might do a jigsaw puzzle sprawled out somewhere, play hide and seek, or build LEGO towers. Make pancakes if that's the mood, or bundle up for hot chocolate in the park. Whatever feels right for your crew will be right on the day.

  • Within a week, you'll receive your edited images via an online gallery - photos that actually look like your family, not some airbrushed version trying to be perfect. High-resolution files ready for your walls, calendars, and memory books. They're yours to print, share, and treasure however you like.

FAQ’s

  • Honestly, because this isn't what I usually do - and that's actually the point. I'm a documentary wedding photographer who's spent ten years capturing real moments, not posed ones. I know how to spot the good stuff, stay out of the way, and make people forget the camera's there. That's a different skill set than traditional family photography.

You're also not getting someone who's burnt out from shooting families every weekend. These November and December sessions are all I'm doing before heading back to NZ for the summer wedding season, which means you're getting fresh eyes and genuine care for how your photos turn out.

If you want formal portraits with everyone matching and smiling at the camera, I'm not your person. But if you want photos that feel like your actual life - the real, lovely, chaotic version - then this might be exactly what you're after.

  • Honestly? You shouldn't unless you really love the look of it. Film has a softness and a grain that digital can't quite replicate - colours sit differently, light behaves in this gorgeous, unpredictable way. There's something about the texture and warmth of film that feels timeless rather than just "on trend."

That said, it's not for everyone. If you want maximum choice and more images to work with, stick with digital. But if you're drawn to that slightly imperfect, nostalgic quality - the kind of photos that could've been taken twenty years ago or yesterday - then film is worth it.

The mixed package gives you both: the reliability and variety of digital plus a roll of film that adds something extra. You get 35 images total instead of 20, and about half will have that film magic. The additional cost essentially covers the film itself and professional developing - so you're getting more images and that film aesthetic without paying a premium on top.

Think of it this way: digital captures everything beautifully and clearly. Film captures the feeling.

  • The location depends on the vibe you're after and what the day gives us. Cozy at home when it's grey outside? Beautiful. Bundled up in the park on a crisp day? Also beautiful. We'll sort out a plan A and plan B beforehand so we're ready either way. Rain or shine, we'll get the shots - the weather just adds its own flavour

  • Absolutely. Life happens, especially with little ones. Just give me as much notice as you can and we'll find another date.

  • I have eight nieces and nephews, so trust me - I get it. I've also photographed hundreds of weddings with kids. Meltdowns, tantrums, tears, the lot. Some of my favourite shots happen mid-chaos or right after. We just roll with it. If someone needs a break, we take one. No stress, no pressure. This is real life, not a staged shoot.

  • I'm based in North London and work mainly across North and East London. Happy to travel to other areas - just ask.

  • The 20 or 35 images you get are carefully edited to tell the story of your session - I don't hold back the "good ones." That said, if you fall in love with the shoot and want additional images, we can chat about that. No pressure though - what's included is designed to be complete.

Email me at ash@florenceandfriends.com and tell me a bit about your family - ages of your kids, where you're based, and send over two date options if you can (it gives us flexibility if the weather's grim or someone wakes up feeling rubbish).

Or if you're more of a texter, message me here.

Spots are limited for November and December, so get in touch sooner rather than later.
